Hewlett Packard LaserJet IIIP - a common user behaviour problem.
Perhaps - the 1st rugged reliable semi-pro work horse laser printer. I've had mine 10 years and used it intensively at times, probably printed over 50 000 pages with 5 toner cartridges. With it being officially "technology obsolete" now I happily feed card through - 10 years back it got premium paper only! I recall the drum life was rated at 30 000 pages, yet I encounter no problems even today with the drum. It is a fine machine.
When the Laser Jet IIIP came out, Windows was 3.1 and 1 meg of ram and a 40 mb hard drive were typical. The printer excelled. Now, many people use the printer they bought years ago or have picked up second user LaserJet IIIP s and a typical PC is a completely different animal.
The Hewlett Packard manual gets lost and perhaps a sheet feeder disappears - but there is still mileage in a IIIP. Crystal clear 300 dpi is still acheiveable with a good toner cartridge.
Particularily with the second user owner, there is a tendency for their Laser Jet IIIP to be declared "broken" - when in fact, it is not at fault. Typically, this happens when the printer fires up ok, but expects paper from the default upper tray when the user loads the lower paper tray. Unable to resolve this - the user goes out and buys a new printer.
To check that this is not what is causing you to think your Laserjet IIIP is defective, when you print your document click on the "printer properties" box and select the appropriate upper or lower paper tray.
In my experience - I have had repair jobs with Laser Jet IIIP s where this was the actual fault!!
